This background for Jonah's page is the Pali (Hawaiian for "cliffs", but also a proper name for this particular section of the Ko'olaus Range). Jonah is living at the base of these mountains on the left-hand side of the photo in Maunawili Valley, Oahu, Hawaii.

In November of 2004, Carol Allen encouraged me to contact Tim Beihoff about his upcoming "E" litter. Rico X Brooke combined the pedigrees of two very special lines, the combination of which was sure to produce some very lovely puppies indeed. I knew instantly that I wanted a male puppy from the breeding, but the problems I faced getting him to Hawaii seemed insurmountable. Due to our strict quarantine laws, importing a puppy would require a four month quarantine at an outdated, run-down facility--something I would not wish on any animal, let alone my very special future friend and companion. The only way around this obstacle would be to wait a year to fulfill the vaccination requirements that would then allow my puppy to enter the state without quarantine. This also meant someone would have to care for, and love my puppy in the interim.
That is how Jonah first went to live in Arizona to live with his sister "Spirit" for the first phase of his journey. Carol and her daughter Elora, opened their hearts and home to my boy, and Jonah thrived while playing in the Arizona sunshine. The second phase of Jonah's life started in May, 2005 when he returned to Tim in Wisconsin. Knowing that points would be hard to come by in Hawaii, Tim graciously offered to train and show Jonah for me. Together, they exceeded my expectations in the show ring, and in September of 2005, I had a ten-month-old finished champion that I had yet to meet in person!
My dream finally came true on Valentine's Day 2006. At the age of fifteen months, Jonah bounced out of his crate and into my van at the Honolulu International Airport. He had just traveled a distance of 4,230 miles, and I was amazed by his bright, cheery disposition after such an arduous trip. I have owned and loved Tervuren since 1991, and in that time I have never met a Belgian quite like Jonah. He was more than I expected in every way--he's a total package with beauty, brains, and the sweetest, most loving temperament one could ever imagine.
While it seemed like such a very long time, fifteen months is nothing when I consider the years and years of painstaking selection and breeding that it takes to produce an animal with Jonah's quality. In the two weeks that he has now been living with me, Jonah and I have already become inseparable, and he has begun to transform my life in so many positive ways. In just a few days, he will make his debut as a special at the Hawaiian Kennel Club's 100th Anniversary All-Breed Dog Show--A historic moment indeed! My Ku'uipo, Jonah, was well worth the wait!
