Jules was to be my next male to
show. He grew to be quite a big boy, at the upper limit of the
standard. At his first show at six months, he won a major. It wasn't surprising, as he had very sound structure with
beautiful fluid and correct movement. His front was outstanding and his angulation, front and rear, was flawless. He had all this plus full and scissors mouth.
Jules was a happy-go-lucky pup but at adolescence, he entered an
insecure stage and either I didn't provide the right environment or training, because he never overcame his insecurity when meeting new
people and dogs.
He was a sweet and gentle dog who always loved children even though
he'd not been raised with them. They would dress him up
with articles of clothing or wrap him up with my knitted throw, with
his legs, ears and snout poking through. He just stood there
patiently and sometimes we found the kids asleep with him.
When he was
middle-aged, I had him neutered as I had no plans to breed him. By that time, we
were showing a totally different style of dog, though I wish we had more of his physical
soundness present today.
He was my pet, my beloved
companion. I enjoyed having just a good-looking boy at my side with no agendas or expectations on my part.
He remained
in the background where he was
content, where he'd rather been, quietly spending his time next to me, touching me if he could. |
